If your laptop includes a Thunderbolt port, chances are it supports the Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 standard, both of which provide 40Gbps. You can also use Thunderbolt to enable an external GPU for your PC. While a USB-C hub can support a single 4K display, often at an eye-wearying 30Hz refresh rate, Thunderbolt docks can support up to two 4K displays at a comfortable 60Hz. That primarily matters where displays are concerned, but can affect the number and type of external hard drives, SSDs, and other peripherals that can your PC can connect to. USB-C hubs are far cheaper, but they offer far less bandwidth. Also, ever other day or so, I find that one displays starts jumping around to the point of being unusable and I have to unplug the dock and then plug back in to reset.The difference? Price and bandwidth. Even here, I have daily, sometimes twice or three times a day where the two external screens go dark for a couple of seconds then come back where they left off - like the dock rebooted. I continue to use the docks because they do allow the two external monitors to work as needed - without DisplayLink. The problem can easily be found in the forum. Technical support is what you would expect from a offshore call center. Does not work even if using a powered USB hub between the peripheral and dock. USB2.0 and USB3.0 DO NOT work with keyboard/mouse or any other USB peripheral such as a standard flash drive. Both offices use a Microsoft 850 wireless keyboard and mouse with USB dongle. I've put on top of the docking station a copper heat sink from an old CPU to cool it down, and that helps a lot of managing the temperature (minus 0.5 star).įor the price, I do recommended it but if you are looking for something perfect, get something else as it clearly lacks of refinement & quality. The docking station gets really hot with the 3 screens ON, that I'm afraid it will eventually burn (temperature is around 60C). I've changed the mouse dongle directly in the USB of the laptop and the mouse if working fine there, but in defies the purpose of a docking station.(minus 1.5 star) I have two wireless dongles for mouse and keyboard on them, the mouse is just freezing and unfreezing sporadically, which is extremely annoying. Short docking station cable (I'm not taking out any stars since I knew it in the product specs when I bought it) I'm running 3 screens in total, two on the docking station and one on the laptop. Works great for dual screen, but USB laggy + heats I just bought and installed the product on my Dell XPS 7590 using my thunderbolt 3.
